It was sunny & cold, muddy & crowded, rainy & windy, but in one word, it was simply amazing.
Thanks to the festival and to you, yeah you who came say hello at the Tippex stand, had a little chat and kissed Berthold on the cheeks.

Lionel et Stéphane Belmondo revisitant l’univers psychédélique et dense du Grateful Dead : illusion ou réalité ? Avec le projet Dead Jazz, les frères souffleurs se lancent dans un périple spatio-temporel délirant qui les expédie directement dans le San Francisco peace & love (et surtout acid…) des agitées sixties. Ils avaient osé les compositeurs français du début du xxe siècle ou le funk de Stevie Wonder, mais cette relecture des plus belles pages du Dead s’annonce comme leur expérience la plus folle. Le rock très électrique du groupe culte californien a fréquemment accosté les rives d’un jazz fusion auquel les frères Belmondo, épaulés par les claviers groovy d’Éric Legnini et Laurent Fickelson, offrent ici un hommage inspiré.

Gros choc des cultures et des générations, ou quand l’électro vintage du jeune duo parisien Zombie Zombie invite le vieux géant du free-jazz Sonny Simmons à défier les règles du possible… On savait Neman d’Herman Düne à la batterie et Étienne Jaumet de Married Monk aux claviers très friands de carambolages stylistiques et temporels. Entre Goblin, Ennio Morricone et Suicide, leur vraie-fausse B. O. de vrais-faux films brasse moult influences qui semblent tendre les bras aux bifurcations toujours inspirées de l’alto de Sonny Simmons. Lui qui souffla aux côtés des plus grands (Charles Mingus, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy…), se laissera porter par les nappes synthétiques et hypnotiques de Zombie Zombie pour accoucher du plus alléchant ovni de cette édition de Jazz à la Villette.

Les revoilà ! Le duo parisien formé par Cosmic Neman (également batteur de Herman Düne) et Etienne Jaumet, poursuit tel un ovni son incroyable odyssée sur la scène indépendante. Une odyssée en forme de fulgurante ascension. Zombie Zombie revendique depuis ses débuts sa passion pour le krautrock et une certaine forme de musique cinématique. Celle de Zombie Zombie évoque inévitablement des groupes comme Neu, Silver Apples, Suicide, Goblin ou les BO… de John Carpenter.
Et ce qui devait arriver arriva ! Après quatre saisons de concerts qui ont immanquablement provoqué l’hystérie un peu partout dans le monde, et un cinémix sur le classique soviétique d’Eisenstien Le Cuirassé Potemkine (créé à la Cité de la Musique fin 2009), Zombie Zombie se lance dans un nouveau projet : réinterpréter sur un disque événement les thèmes des films de John Carpenter, et en profite pour présenter un tout nouveau live.
John Carpenter n’est pas que le réalisateur de Assault on Precinct 13 (en 76), le blockbuster Halloween (en 78), New York 1997 (en 81), l’anthologique The Thing (en 82) ou Christine (en 83). Il est aussi le compositeur, génial, des BO de ses propres films.
Zombie Zombie, avait déjà rendu hommage à Carpenter et à The Thing, dans un court métrage d’animation pour le EP DrIving This Road Until Death.
Aujourd’hui, c’est un véritable autel que dresse et embrasse le duo, en signe d’adoration, presque de soumission, au génie créatif de John Carpenter.
Sur scène, ces deux musiciens que tout semblait opposer, entrent dans une forme de transe contagieuse, pour mieux kidnapper l’auditeur et l’emmener dans ses propres zones de turbulences. Bid, chanteur du monochrome set a fait une rupture d’anévrisme début aout. Il est actuellement à l’hopital et a été opéré. Ses jours ne sont pas en danger mais tous les concerts du Monochrome Set sont annulé pour les 6 prochains mois. Nous espérons pouvoir les reprogrammer en 2011.

You can call it retro-futurist or simply old-fashioned synth-pop but Splash Wave makes the kind of music which calls up a scrolling of synthetic landscapes, some pixelated scenes of chase and three-color printed memories shooted somewhere between L.A and Düsseldorf.

Another fun and interesting piece of eye candy from The Chap, a video just as inimitable as the band’s experimental Euro-pop aesthetic. Taken from The Chap’s latest album “Well Done Europe” , the song is from called “We work in bars” and it’s about people who work in bars. Bingo! The video was shot in – a pub! Yay!
Being pretty rad n unconventional types, The Chap unleash the video to that song NOW, although it came out months ago and has since been followed by ANOTHER single with another video. But then, the whole video is stop frame live action, i.e. video director Harry Rambaut made The Chap spend endless mornings in a North London boozer, only to throw buckets of water and pints of ale at them, make them change seats and facial expressions every five seconds for hours on end or get them to fall off a bar stool in twenty stages. In short: it took a long time to make. It was well worth the wait, though! We’ll drink to that!!
P.S. : another video for another song is underway. Apparently, a whole team of professionals is working on it around the clock since it’s hugely complicated to make…it will be compelling viewing…wait until autumn…
