In 1974 Jad Fair, along with his brother David, co-founded the lo-fi alternative rock group Half Japanese. Over the ensuing three decades, Half Japanese released fourteen albums (which are all due to be reissued on Fire Records throughout 2012), and in the process, attracted a solid base of fans passionate about the band’s pure, unbridled enthusiasm for rock and roll.

Jad also performs and records as a solo artist, and occasionally collaborates with musicians such as Daniel Johnston, Teenage Fanclub, Moe Tucker (of Velvet Underground), Yo La Tengo, Steve Shelley and Thurston Moore (of Sonic Youth), John Zorn, Kramer, The Pastels and many more.

Having developed a talent for album cover design by creating his own solo artwork and making many of the Half Japanese sleeves, Jad embarked on a second career as a visual artist. His simple, joyous drawings and intricate, complex paper cuttings are shown in galleries around the world. Books of his artwork have been published in the U.S., UK, Germany, France and Japan.

Half Japanese will perform an exclusive show for the ATP festival curated by Jeff Mangum from Neutral Milk Hotel as well as the Radio Nova anniversary in Oslo. Jad will also be touring with various different artists for certain shows, including drummer Gilles Rieder, and Norman Blake from Teenage Fanclub.

Jad Fair will also be playing along Daniel Johnston for certain shows, at the occasion of the exhibitions of Daniel Johnston in Lieu Unique, Nantes in April and in La Casa Encendida, Madrid in May.

DANIEL JOHNSTON “WELCOME TO MY WORLD” (US / EXHIBITION)

Cult artist from the alternative music scene, Daniel Johnston lives and works in Texas. Supported by Sonic Youth, Larry Clark, David Bowie, Kurt Cobain or Matt Groening, Produced by le lieu unique and Arts Factory, “Welcome to my world” is an exhibition of Daniel Johnston graphic work, with more than 100 original drawings from different periods, a focus on Daniel Johnston and his fans (wallpaintings, fanzines…), music memorabilia, documentaries, filmed performances, short movies of Daniel Johnston. The original exhibition will be held in lieu unique in Nantes, France, from April 7th to May 20th 2012 and will be available afterward for touring – Booking contact (available from June 2012 and onwards)

Kellies have created and developed an irresistible blend of raw, spicy rock that owes as much to old rock and roll as it does the Raincoats, which turned out to be a veritable birthday party of a record. Their wild primitive rock comprises catchy garage sounds with cumbia, dub and post-punk.

Primeros Pasitos and Julie Tippex are currently working on bringing them back to UK and Europe June and July 2012, after a Mexico and Chile tour April 2012.

As some of you may know, Extra Life was formed in 2007 by singer/keyboardist Charlie Looker after he left the cult math noise band Zs, and following collaborations with genious such Glenn Branca or Dirty Projectors. After some lineup changes, the band has steadied as a trio with guitarist/violinist producer Caley Monahon-Ward and drummer Nick Podgurski.

As they state in their blog, “Dream Seeds is definitely a concept album, the themes of which I won’t elaborate on here, but it’s very much of a piece. The record includes all the previously unrecorded songs we’ve been playing live for the past year, plus a couple never-performed songs, all tough-lovingly recorded by Extra Life’s own Caley Monahon-Ward, in collaboration with Ben Greenberg”.

Twenty-nine years after its release, Young Marble Giants’ legendary Colossal Youth – Rough Trade, recorded in 1980 in five days and mixed in 20 minutes – remains a landmark in post-punk music, an enigma of its own, acclaimed by musicians and audience over the years.

Formed in 1978 in Cardiff, the trio’s music was constructed around the powerful and minimal instrumentation of brothers Philip and Stuart Moxham on bass and guitar, supporting the naive untrained vocals of Alison Statton.

Stuart Moxham wrote the majority of the band’s songs, and his writing was often deceptively simple-seeming, giving YMG’s classic work a uniquely fragile yet powerful quality.

Reunited in 2007, the band has been since playing some rare shows around Europe. The orginal drum-machine parts are now played on electronic drums by third Moxham brother Andrew.

Julie Tippex are huge fans of YMG and are very proud to have been working with the band since their reunion. Thank you for all these amazing shows friends!

The new songs will be available from 13 Feb on iTunes, and one week later on CD and LP. As they say, “it’s full of NON-IRONIC super straight pop songs we made up last year”. This is the follow up to their compilation “We are the Best”, and its 5th album to date.

They have also shot a really nice video of one of the catchiests songs of the record. The footage comes from the tour they did last november, and it makes you feel somehow like spending a day with them. Best song at the moment to start the day!

Ted Milton was a puppeteer before he founded BLURT. “Puppeteers Of The World, Unite!” was the first song he wrote & recorded – it was released by Factory Records on The Factory Quartet double album in 1980, then again the following year on the concert recording “Blurt In Berlin”, & then reissued last year on the Fac Dance compilation…

Ted Milton will begin each show on this tour with a short “puppet” performance to introduce this song -  BLURT will then play material from its earliest back catalogue right up to its most recent work – including the as-yet unreleased “Vous Etes Ici” written with Graham Lewis (Wire) – (the first performance of this song can be seen on utube under “Blurt At The Macbeth)…

Well organized from A to Z, with a brief intro text for all the bands, this is a gift for all music astronauts.

Berlin based trio FENSTER embarks on a US tour in March and April 2012, including performances at SXSW and New York venues Cake Shop and Pianos. On March 2nd (Europe) and 13th (USA), they will release their debut album ‘Bones’ on german label Morr Music.

FENSTER plays de-constructed pop music, layering subtle distortions, melodic chords and city soundscapes under dream narratives. Their music ranges from dream pop to freak folk, lo-fi ballads and 50′s surf songs. Their debut album ‘Bones’ takes its narrative structure from the associative logic of dreams, weaving morbid imagery and playful fairytales together into a sardonic play against backdrops of dark forests, train rides, graveyards, mountains and seashores. FENSTER’s charm and inimitability comes in the form of collage; hungry to integrate their vision of the future with the sound of the past.
