SILVER APPLES
Silver Apples appeared on the New York scene in 1967. Far from the Dead/Airplane-influenced West Coast hippies, their psychedelic music came with a dark-repetitive-New-York-scary flavour that did not sound like the rest of the Summer of Love. Friends with Jimi Hendrix, headliners to the Central Park 1969 Festival celebrating the first man on the Moon, Silver Apples and their two cultish albums were also way ahead of their time. Decades after their brief yet influential career first ground to a sudden and mysterious halt, the Silver Apples remain one of pop music’s true enigmas: a surreal, almost unprecedented duo, their music explored interstellar drones and hums, pulsing rhythms and electronically-generated melodies years before similar ideas were adopted in the work of acolytes ranging from Suicide to Spacemen 3 to Laika. The band is now touring as a solo act, SIMEON, aka “The Oscillation Man”, who sings and plays his famous hand-made instrument, ‘The Simeon”, made of “nine audio oscillators piled on top of each other and eighty-six manual controls to control lead, rhythm and bass pulses with hands, feet and elbows”…
“Sid Vicious told me” Simeon said “that the Sex Pistols always played Silver Apples in the dressing room before going onstage.”

SIGHTINGS (Load Records, Brah Records/US)
Sightings is a New York City -based trio of musicians, operating on the boundaries of rock and avant-garde sounds. The lineup consists of Mark Morgan on guitar, Richard Hoffman on bass, and Jon Lockie on drums. The band debuted with a 7” on the Freedom From label and has since released records through Load Records and Psych-O-Path Records. In 2010, the band’s seventh studio album was released – “City Of Straw” appeared on Oneida’s Brah Records.

DUSTIN WONG (Guitar Loops/Thrill Jockey/US)
Dustin Wong, like many of us, dove into the world of music and art as an unhappy youth looking to rebel against certain ideals and “absolute truths” that contrasted his own beliefs. A twisting path of punk discovery and a growing respect for sonic visionaries like Jimi Hendrix, Brian Wilson, John Fahey, and Brian Eno led Dustin to further pursue his muse. He eventually wound up at the Maryland Institute College of Art, where he met and co-founded the critically acclaimed band Ponytail. In addition to his film studies, Dustin was also a founding member of Ecstatic Sunshine, whose music hinted more at the direction he would eventually take in this his solo debut. – Thrill Jockey
